The Healthy Benefits of Meditation

By Ashley Chapman

Do you find yourself stressed often? Stress can be common in those who work in careers that have intense deadlines, long hours or wherever you are managing a group of people. Regardless of what is causing your stress, it is important to know strategies to help lower it. Read more to find out how meditation may help lower your stress.

What is Meditation?

Mediation is the practice of focusing your mind on a specific thought.  Those who meditate normally choose a mantra or saying that they repeat in their minds to help clear other thoughts or anxiety. Some may meditate with soothing music paired with breathing, to calm down.

Below are a few of the benefits that come from including meditation in your daily routine. Do any of them resonate with you?

Anxiety

Regardless of the type of anxiety that you suffer from, meditation can offer a form of relief. If you suffer from anxiety that is triggered by participating in an activity, it could be beneficial to meditate before participating as a way to calm down.

For those who are anxious about work or a deadline coming up, choosing to meditate in the morning before heading into work can help lower your anxiety and reduce the pressure we feel. Many of us perform better when there's less pressure on us, even if it's self-imposed.

Improves Sleep

For some people, feeling stressed can lead to sleepless nights. Without sleep, you are unable to accomplish as many things and your quality of work may not be the best. Choosing to meditate before bed helps clear the mind of stresses that may be getting in the way of your sleep.

Lower Blood Pressure

Stress is one of the main reasons that your blood pressure is high. The risk factors of high blood pressure include risk of heart attack, heart failure and kidney disease. If you've got children you want to see grow up, lowering your blood pressure -- even if the kids are the cause of it -- is a good idea.

Getting Started

Creating a schedule for meditation is the first step in getting started. Try to choose one day a week that you can dedicate for a time to yourself. Next, you want to find a small and quiet place where you will not be distracted or interrupted. Some suggestions could be your bedroom, in your backyard, or by the beach or park. Choose a type of meditation that works best for you. Whether you play soothing music, repeat a mantra or focus on deep breathing, all will help clear your mind and help lower your risk of stress and anxiety.
