Morning Workouts: Here's How You Can Make Them Easier

By Genevieve Cunningham

For some people, finding time to work out is really hard. After work, you're exhausted. If you exercise too late, you're up half the night. It can be incredibly frustrating, especially if you actually want to make exercise a part of your life. For some people, the answer is to work out first thing in the morning. Of course, this is the most difficult time for most people. You're tired and warm and hitting the gym sounds terrible. But what if it could be a little easier? If you think morning workouts might be for you, take a look at these tips to make them easier than ever.

Do It At Home

It might be easier to do a workout in the morning if you just don't leave your house. Roll out of bed, put on some shoes, start your coffee, and then work out in your living room. Buy an at home program or find some exercises online. The fact that you don't leave your house makes it much more likely that you'll actually get the exercise done. Give this a try first, and if you're feeling really motivated, you can always try to make it to the gym later.

Keep It Low-Impact

Unless you're naturally a morning person, you should probably keep your early morning exercise fairly low key. Something low-impact and easy on the body is a great place to begin. Start by doing some yoga or taking a walk. Start with a gentle swim in the summer. It's hard to get moving in the mornings, and there isn't any reason to make it harder. Start slow and easy, and you're more likely to stick with it long-term.

Get a Buddy

It doesn't matter what you're doing. If you have to meet someone else there, you're way more likely to make it happen. You won't want to let the other person down. If you want to do early morning workouts, get a buddy. Find someone who also wants to create and keep this habit. You'll keep each other motivated, and  both of you will feel responsible for the other person. This is a great way to have personal responsibility, but motivation from someone else as well to keep you moving toward your goals.

Early morning workouts can be hard, there's no doubt about it. But it also feels really good to just get them out of the way! Use these tips to create a new morning exercise habit. It might take some time and persistence, but stick with it. Over time, you may find that the morning is the best time for exercise, and you'll quickly see an improvement in health to go along with it.
