Keep the Flu Away This Winter

By Virginia Laird

Fever and coughing and aching ... oh my! You guessed it. It is flu season and there is little to be excited about for this virus. Health and wellness experts admit there is little that can be done to completely eliminate the chance of falling ill. While many will choose to get the flu vaccine to help prevent this awful sickness, it is good hygiene and healthy habits that can make a huge difference. A few things to consider making part of your daily routine when trying to prevent the flu include:

  • Disinfect your home daily
  • When you are sick, stay home
  • Get good sleep each night

Disinfect Your Home Daily

Each day as you go about your list of chores, errands, and accomplish other daily demands you encounter a host of germs. Each time you bring them back to your home. With flu season in full swing, it is pressing that you take the necessary precautions to keep this virus away from your family. Health and wellness experts suggest that cleaning the surfaces of your home daily is a great way to wash away such germs. A simple disinfecting wipe on your counters and doorknobs can help keep your family healthy.

When You are Sick, Stay Home

Although you may be teetering on the line when it comes to the number of days you have left to miss work, it is necessary that you stay home when you are ill. Research suggests that those who are sick are more likely to get another virus on top of the one at hand. Instead, it is better for your health to stay home resting when you are sick. Likewise, those who are not ill will thank you for your consideration in not bringing your sickness to work and sharing it with them.

Get Good Sleep Each Night

For many years research has suggested that getting enough sleep is beneficial in helping the body fight off illness. This remains true today. Although finding time to get enough sleep can be a struggle, it is one that's worth the battle. Health and wellness experts advise that most adults should attempt to get a minimum of six hours of sleep each night, although there are plenty who require much more than this. Start today making sleep a priority.

Hopefully you will be able to take the necessary actions to keep the flu germs away from your family throughout the entire flu season. Good luck!
