3 Reasons to Skip the Coffee

By Genevieve Cunningham

Coffee is so good. The smell, the warmth, the slightly bitter taste. It's a crutch for many people. It's what wakes them up and keeps them going throughout the day. But if we're being honest, we know that there are some things about coffee that aren't the healthiest. And in some cases, these may be enough to make you want to quit. But should you? If you're on the fence about your coffee consumption, take a look at these three great reasons to quit or cut back for better health.

To Get Back Your Natural Energy

Coffee contains caffeine, and caffeine gives us an energy boost. And honestly, this is why most people drink it in the first place. But once we begin to rely on this energy boost, we begin to lose our natural energy reserves. If you quit or cut back on coffee, you may be able to get a little bit of that natural energy back. It won't happen right away. At first, you'll feel sluggish and tired. But the longer you go without, the more your body will regulate, and the more natural energy you'll gain back.

To Protect Your Teeth

Coffee is both acidic and dark in color. And these two things can be bad for our teeth. A hardcore coffee drinker often has slightly stained teeth. Why? Because it's not feasible to brush after every single cup of coffee. And the longer the coffee stays on the teeth, the more likely it is to cause staining. If you cut back, you'll be limiting the exposure to your teeth, and in the long-term, this means lowering the likelihood of a stained or damaged smile.

To Cut a Few Calories

Coffee itself isn't high in calories. But most of us add quite a bit to our cup of joe. Cream, sugar, whip cream, milk, caramel, chocolate drizzles. We can add so much to our coffee that it literally becomes thousands of calories. Cutting back or quitting can cut your caloric intake, which may help you reach weight loss goals faster.

If you love your coffee, you don't have to give it up completely. There's mountains of evidence on both sides of the coffee table in this debate. But if you've been thinking of quitting or cutting back, there are some good reasons to do so. In the long run, just weigh your options. Choose what works for you and your health goals, and make decisions about your wellness from there.
