However You Say It, Tomatoes Can Be Good for Health

By Tom Herrin

Everyone has those foods they try to have as much as possible.  For many, it may be biscuits and gravy.  For many others, they don't want a meal without corn or maybe rice.  For others, tomatoes are the food of choice for inclusion in as many meals as possible.  It is one of those foods that can be served in all kinds of ways.  Many prefer them sliced, many like them cooked in almost any type of dish, and still others enjoy them as sauce or salsa.  It is one of those foods that people often seem to either really love or may not care too much for.

Tomatoes Are Packed with Vitamins

Many times, people think of citrus fruits when they are looking for a good source of Vitamin C.  Tomatoes can fill that need as well with one tomato containing about 40 percent of the daily supply needed.  Vitamins A and K, along with potassium, are also present in a reasonably good portion.  For those who are in need of iron, tomatoes can also be a source of this.

They May Help Protect the Skin

For years, people have made all sorts of tomato pastes to use them as a treatment for sunburns.  Much of this seemed like a wive's tale, but apparently there is something to it.  It seems that they are also used in other health and cosmetic products such as those designed to prevent aging and as an ingredient in some antiperspirants.  Some may have heard of them used in a bath for someone who has been sprayed by a skunk.

They Can Add Flavor to Lots of Meals

Most of us are pretty familiar with tomatoes on a sandwich or a hamburger.  I enjoy them fresh with a touch of salt.  When I make a soup or stew, which I do sometimes in cooler weather, I like to add stewed tomatoes.  Some people add them to chili or beans.  This list is pretty long, but they are really versatile.  In recent years, they seem to have found a place on many tables in the form of salsa or picante sauce.  My wife would eat them with every meal given the chance.  They are an easy thing to include in meals to be sure you have your bases covered.  Why not do it more often?
