Chiropractic Tip: Know How to Fall Without Injury

By Sandy Schroeder

Most of us have taken small spills, quickly scrambling to our feet, totally embarrassed. Falls happen when we dart down steps, hurry to meet people, or run after a pet. As we get into our 40s and 50s, there are body changes and random situations that increase the risk for falls.

  • Changes in vision
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Illness
  • New medications
  • Distractions like kids or pets
  • Slick tile surfaces or loose rugs
  • Sidewalk cracks or dips

When we start to fall, it is natural to reach out to stop the fall. Many communities offer prevention classes to teach you how to fall safely and avoid falls.

What to Do During a Fall

Here are some simple steps from Harvard Health to take if you start to fall. See yourself as a pilot and use those 2 to 3 seconds to find a safe landing. (Think of Sully landing on the Hudson River!)

Lean into the fall - This will help you gain some control over the direction of the fall.

Fall sideways - If possible, fall sideways into a soft area.

Go for grass or dirt - Aim toward open soft areas.

Avoid other people - If you are in a group, fall away from others. For example, in a tai chi class in which everyone is standing together, it would be better to fall forward, catching yourself with your hands, than falling into the person next to you.

Avoid dangerous objects - Wrought iron fences and concrete structures can cause fractures or puncture wounds.

Swing arms sideways - Help direct your fall by moving arms to the side.

Twist shoulders - Protect your head by twisting shoulders.

Keep knees bent - Do not lock knees and keep feet down.

Go limp as you fall - Relax the whole body and fall like a sack of beans.

Land on your cushioned parts - Your thighs and bottom provide softer thicker places that absorb impact and are closer to the ground.

Roll to the side - Roll into a ball to stop the fall and reduce impact.
