Creating a Winter Fitness Routine

By Brandi Swieter

Finding time for fitness in the winter isn't always easy, but it needs to be done to maintain overall health. Creating a fitness routine is best to ensure it's set into the schedule. Indoor and outdoor options exist.

Take Daily Walks

Even when the weather is cold, it's still possible to enjoy a walk outside. Daily walks can help to get in some exercise time while also clearing the mind. If it's that cold, then all you have to do is bundle up with layers. Hats, scarves, coats, gloves, and a good pair of hiking boots will work wonders to maintain warmth. Find a time each day that works best, such as first thing in the morning, at lunchtime, or at the end of the day to unwind.

Find a Local Gym

A local gym that offers equipment may be best for your situation. Figure out their open hours and find a time in your schedule that works best to visit. Some gyms are even open 24 hours so that you may go anytime you need. This works well for people who work different shifts besides a typical 9-5.

Go for a Swim

No, you don't have to head to the beach and dive into freezing water to get some swim time. There are nearby aquatic centers or gyms with pools that allow you to swim indoors instead. The Rock Hill Aquatics Center, for example, offers open swim as well as classes. Joining a beginner's water aerobics class can be a huge help in maintaining fitness for those with limited mobility or joint pain.

Take an Interest in Winter Sports

Winter sports provide a great opportunity for fitness. Take an interest in one or more and start playing. You can find a local team to join or simply find a place to practice on your own or with a few friends. A ski lesson at a lodge nearby may be an option, or try ice skating at Founders Holiday Ice Rink.

Exercise is essential to good health. To improve both the body and brain, people need to incorporate more fitness into their lives. Winter depression sets in for many, making this season the most important for getting more exercise and finding the time to workout.
