5 Different Ways Goals Can Be Hijacked
By Sandy Schroeder
As we head toward spring, we may have a lot of goals just waiting to happen, but too often they lose momentum when obstacles get in the way .
I looked at my list of goals for last year and was pleased that some of them happened, but disappointed that others did not. If you feel the same way, it's time to dig in and make them all happen.
DumbLittleMan.com agreed, as they came up with their own suggestions for obstacles and solutions.
Need for a clear plan - Goals are full of bright images and wonderful dreams, but reality says an overall printed plan is needed to actually make something happen. Start with an outline and then fill in the details with action items and dates. Post your plan on your wall, bulletin board or computer to serve as a constant reminder.
Real resource support - Too often dreams arrive with full blown visions, but no concrete means of support. Solution: Start with a specific list of the things that will be needed, costs to achieve, and possible sources of support. Once the list is made you may find yourself moving right along to pull together the needed time and money.
Information overload - If you are like me, it is all too easy to keep notes, acquire endless sites, and collect way more information than is needed. Solution: Review the information that you have and pull out key points and contacts. Then start reaching out to find the best people and strategies to start working on the goal. If the first contact does not work, keep going. Try one after another.
Inspiration and motivation - I have a friend who is one of the most motivated people that I know. She has had several careers and is currently powering another major project. She has a sign at her house that reads, "Nothing was ever accomplished without enthusiasm!" Indeed, that is what it is all about. Solution: Always look for motivated people who make things happen. Avoid the toxic ones. Look for successful people in your field and watch what they are doing.
Need for more road maps - Once you get things moving you may still need more expert advice and direction. Do weekly reviews and reach out for more help when you need it. There are teachers, mentors and business coaches out there who can help you stay on track.
