4 Methods for Enhancing Kidney Function

By Brandi Goodman

National Kidney Month arrives in March. Prepare now if you want to learn all you can about keeping your kidneys functioning. At least five methods exist for enhancing the function of your kidneys and keeping them working to eliminate the waste from your body.

Drink Plenty of Water

The recommended amount of water to drink per day generally falls around a half-gallon. This is roughly the equivalent of eight glasses of water containing eight ounces each, and for many people, it's about half their body weight in ounces. Too much less than this and you won't be staying hydrated enough to keep your kidneys functioning and operating as they should.

Eat Foods Rich in Fiber and Antioxidants

Following a healthy diet is far too much of a wide range of advice. For optimal kidney function, you want a diet particularly high in fiber and antioxidants. This means eating lots of leafy greens and berries. Cabbage, broccoli, strawberries, blueberries, and apples are some of the top choices for healthy kidneys. You also want to avoid too much red meat and sodium. The goal is to keep blood pressure at normal levels. Elevated blood pressure readings can lead to kidney problems.

Talk to Your Doctor About Supplements

If you already have worries about your kidneys, taking supplements should never be done until you've spoken with your doctor. Even vitamins can cause damage if you get an excessive amount in your system. Calcium supplements, for example, can raise blood pressure. If you have strong bones and get enough exercise, as well as have a diet that includes calcium, a supplement may not be recommended.

Get Regular Chiropractic Care

You may not realize it, but chiropractic care does far more than ease joint pain. Adjusting a subluxation or restricted joint can prevent joint restrictions from interfering with the body's processes. It allows all systems within the body to operate at optimal levels, and this includes the kidneys. A restriction blocks blood flow and prevents the central nervous system from communicating with the brain to ensure all bodily processes are working to the best of their abilities. Getting regular chiropractic care can improve kidney function, the function of other systems, and improve overall health.

National Kidney Month isn't the only time you should worry about your kidney health. Continue to follow these methods for enhancing their function throughout the year and you'll have incredibly healthy kidneys that will continue to function well for a long time to come. Even with kidney disease, these options can help to lessen symptoms and improve quality of life.
