Go Back to Old Times for a Healthy Diet

By Tom Herrin

For those who have spent their share of time reading stories from long past, they may recall references to diet.  They may not have actually seen it as diet, but there are many occasions in which the supply of food is mentioned.  Many of the stories mentioned in books such as the Bible refer to people eating fish.  This is likely because it was available.  For the most part, wherever there was a body of water, there was food.  Fish has been a food source for many years.  While it may not be because of its healthy properties, it has plenty just the same.

It Is Full of Nutrients

Many people try their best to have nutritious meals for their families.  At the same time, they often place conditions on it due to their own personal biases.  The fact is that fish can provide lots of nutrients.  It has iodine, minerals, and vitamins.  It is also one of the higher protein foods.  In addition to that, the fatty fish contains omega-3 fatty acids.  These are fish such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, trout, and sardines.  Eating these are especially beneficial.  There are many who believe that eating fish on a regular basis may be one of the best ways to make a diet healthier.

It May Help to Protect the Brain

Many people are concerned about loss of mental capacity or function as they age.  There are certainly a lot of cases of problems related to this.  Eating fish as part of a regular diet may be a way to protect important grey matter needed for the brain to do what it needs to do.  Patients with Alzheimer's are known to have a reduction in grey matter.  Some studies have indicated that people who eat fish frequently have more grey matter in some of centers of the brain.  It is good supportive evidence for adding more of it in a diet.

It May Help Prevent Depression

Some studies have shown that eating fish can make people happier and experience less depression.  It also seems that eating fish may make antidepressant medication more effective for those who take it.  I am a believer in eating fish.  Not only do I like it, but I also believe it can improve overall health.  If nothing else, I try to open a can of sardines or salmon as a light meal or snack.  It is inexpensive and may do lots of good things.
