Any Exercise May Help, Even While Sitting

By Tom Herrin

Many people are the same when it comes to seeking the best way to satisfy their need for more activity.  Finding excuses is easy, and it can work well for some.  Those who work in jobs in which they spend hours sitting may have a difficult time getting motivated.  Creating opportunities to be more active can be a challenge.  With a little planning, it is possible to develop a routine that can pay off.  It is entirely possible to get quality exercise while sitting in a chair.  It can also be a good break from the regular daily grind.  It won't serve as any kind of aerobic workout, but something is always better than nothing at all.

It Is Easy to Work the Hands

People sometimes pay little attention to the need for hand strength.  It is necessary in lots of the things they do.  Finding a little exercise that can be done to work the hands during short breaks can improve some strength as well as get the circulation going.  A really simple activity can be to make a fist fairly tightly.  It may be done with or without an object in the hand.  Squeezing tightly for three to five seconds and then releasing and flexing the fingers as wide as possible can serve as a rep.  Repeating this with each hand and doing so for several times can do more than people realize.

It May Be Used to Work the Legs

Most people sit with their legs crossed at times.  They can put this practice to work by extending the legs and raising them as high as possible.  As they do this, they can push down with the leg on top, creating some resistance.  Holding this for 20 to 30 seconds at a time can work those muscles a little.  Changing legs and doing it with the other can help to balance the activity.  It may be done as many times as desired.  The end result can be a respectable workout for the legs.

It May Be Used as a Prescribed Workout

Evaluating your own personal needs can help in developing a program that works for you.  I have tried these and other such exercises and been pleased with the results.  You won't have to run to the showers after doing them, but you may find that you have actually gained some strength in the muscles you are identifying for work.  Try it, and I think you may surprise yourself.
