Fitness Options for the Aging Individual

By Brandi Goodman

Older Americans Month gets celebrated in May. The Administration for Community Living observes this month as a way to encourage older adults and their communities. As people get older, their bodies do not work as well as they once did. It may be more difficult to engage in certain activities. With some fitness options meant for the aging individual, even older adults can maintain as much of their physique as possible.

Water Aerobics

Water aerobics is a great option if you suffer from joint pain. The water is not as harsh on your joints and allows you to exercise with much more ease. You can find a water aerobics class to join or simply head to a local pool or even the beach and try some different exercises in the water.

Chair Exercises

It may be difficult for you to even stand. In this case, chair exercises are a possibility. You can stay seated while lifting one leg at a time, doing arm circles, hip thrusts, and even simply using your arms to lift yourself off the seat and lowering yourself back down again. These moves done regularly can start to build muscle and increase strength.

Walking

A simple walk around the block can do wonders for your health. It boosts mood while also burning calories. If you're able, start going for regular walks to get your exercise in each day. Start by taking a leisurely stroll through your own neighborhood and then venture out to parks and other local hot spots that allow you to take in some beautiful views.

Cycling

Going for a bike ride can also be beneficial. If you don't feel comfortable riding alone outdoors, try an indoor cycling bike instead. You can simply sit and pedal and remain stationary without having to worry about keeping yourself balanced like with a regular bike. If you are able to get on a bike outdoors, take a friend with you for safety. Ride around your neighborhood or find a bike trail.

Before starting a new fitness routine, you may want to stop in to The Joint Chiropractic. The doctor will remove any joint restrictions or subluxations and ensure your body is capable of handling the workout. He may also have some helpful tips on which exercises would be beneficial to try and some stretches to start out with before you begin.
