Why You Should Ignore Fad Diets
By Genevieve Cunningham
No one really likes to go on a diet. We don't like the restriction. We don't like the hunger feeling. And yet, we often jump on board the newest fad anyway. Why? Usually it's because we're hoping that the newest diet trend is the magic pill. We're hoping it will be just what we need to drop weight and boost confidence. Of course, the newest fad usually doesn't work, right? If you're guilty of this negative pattern, take a look at why you should ignore the fad diets and what you should do instead.
Time Matters
The thing about fad diets is that they don't have time on their side. The truth is that it takes a lot of time to see whether something works. We often jump into these diets without any thought about potential side effects or long-term success. We want it now. But understanding the true effectiveness and repercussions of these diets is important. And while the diet may work now, we have no way to truly know whether it will work for a lifetime.
Fad Results are Temporary
When you start a new diet, you'll probably lose weight. Shifts in your current routine often result in weight loss. But will it last? Many fad diets come with temporary results. We're lighter until we stop the diet -- and then the weight comes back again. If you're looking for lasting weight loss, fad diets definitely aren't the way to go.
Lifestyle First
Fad diets do little to change your lifestyle. But changing your lifestyle is the only thing that really works. Lasting weight loss requires you to make changes and stick with them every single day. It requires shifts in your thinking. It requires new habits. And fad diets don't bring any of that to the table. If you're serious about weight loss and better health, focus on living a healthier lifestyle, and the rest will follow.
It's tempting to try the new fad diet. We see it working for everyone else, so why not us, right? But don't let the promise of fast weight loss keep you from making permanent change. Instead, stick with healthy eating, regular movement, and good sleep, and the weight loss and healthy living won't be far behind.
