4 Options for Boosting Children's Eye Health
By Brandi Goodman
Children's Eye Health and Safety Month encourages parents to encourage their kids to care for their vision. Too many children are suffering from dry, red, and itchy eyes as well as problems with their sight due to screen time and poor safety habits. Teach your children some ways to maintain their eye health so they can keep their sight working as intended.
Get Toys That Encourage Visual Development
Certain toys may be fun for kids to play with, but they don't do much good for visual development. From an early age, children should be given toys that encourage visual development and will help to develop strong eyesight. Crib mobiles are ideal for infants, for example, while puzzles and sorting games are best for children as they get older.
Encourage Exercise
Exercise is one of the best methods for keeping the body healthy overall. This includes eyesight. Because physical activity promotes better blood flow, helps to maintain weight, keeps cholesterol levels and blood pressure from rising, and releases toxins, it helps to improve the ability of the eyes along with every other part of the body. Encourage your kids to get up and get active often. Dance with them in the living room. Play a game of catch outside. Take them to the park and let them run and explore.
Have Them Wear a Hat and Sunglasses Outdoors
The sun is extremely harmful to the eyes. Always tell your kids to look away from the sun rather than directly at it. Be sure they are wearing a hat and sunglasses when they're outside so they are better protected from harmful UV rays that damage the eyes.
Provide Healthy Meals
Processed foods and junk are bad for the body and the eyes. They bring in toxins that can cause damage to eyesight. Provide healthy meals for your children and encourage them to choose these healthier foods for snacks. Leafy greens are especially beneficial, as are fruits and vegetables that contain vitamins, such as Vitamin A and Vitamin C.
Be sure your children are being considerate of their eye health at all times. Do what you can to keep their eyes protected at all times whether indoors or out, and teach them how to do so for themselves when you're not around.
