Alleviating Pregnancy Pain with Chiropractic Care

By Randi Morse

Being pregnant is truly a blessing. The fact that you're able to bring new life into the world is nothing short of a miracle. However, there are times during pregnancy that you don't feel like you're creating a miracle, you feel in pain, sore, and miserable. There is a price to pay for pregnancy, but a chiropractor may be able to help take some of those aches and pains away.

No Medications

One important thing most pregnant mothers know is that you have to be very cautious what type of medication you take during your pregnancy. The great thing about chiropractic care is that there are no medications necessary in order to help alleviate your pain. Chiropractic care helps to reduce the nerve stress in the spine by ensuring proper alignment of the spinal column.

Is It Safe?

Most women are completely safe to visit a chiropractor during their pregnancy. There are only a few pregnancy-related health conditions that may prevent you from visiting a chiropractor; these situations include things like: ectopic pregnancy, placenta previa, or toxemia. If you're unsure of the safety of a chiropractic visit during your pregnancy contact your obstetrician's office. They will be happy to tell you if you have any conditions that would prevent you from seeking chiropractic care.

What About the Belly?

If you're worried about your protruding belly during chiropractic care, don't be. Chiropractors not only have special tables that will adjust to accommodate the belly, they also have techniques they use that will not put pressure on the abdomen, keeping you and your baby safe and comfortable during the entire appointment. Your chiropractor may even be able to show you different techniques and stretches you can use to help ease any discomfort between appointments.

Your Posture

We all have a center of gravity and once we become adults, that center of gravity generally doesn't change. The one exception is during pregnancy. As your body changes and the weight shifts your posture may change as well. This posture change can cause restrictions, commonly called misalignments in the joints and the spine. This can then cause tension or pain. The lower back may also wind up sore due to the changing the pelvis makes as the body is adjusting for labor.

Regular chiropractic visits can help a pregnant mother to alleviate the pain and stress she has in her back. There was even a medical study done that showed that 75 percent of pregnant women who had regular chiropractic care were able to find relief from their pain.
