Micro Workouts May Produce Results

By Tom Herrin

It is seldom that anyone ever thinks about working out less in order to get, or stay, in shape.  The general consensus is usually the more time they get in for that workout, the better the results will be.  While this may have long been the belief of many, it is not always the case.  In some instances, it is possible to get some good exercise with sessions of only five or 10 minutes.  Many times, a good session can produce results that may be every bit as good as those earned otherwise.  As with so many things, good planning can have a huge impact.

If You Like Jogging, Keep It Brief

Many people are dedicated joggers, or runners.  For them, spending 30 minutes or an hour doing so makes them feel better.  While this can be rewarding, those who have a need to crunch their time a little more, a much shorter run may produce good results and still leave time for other activities.  According to information from the Journal of American College of Cardiology, those who run for as little as seven minutes per day may have a 45 percent less chance of dying of heart disease.  That is pretty good news for those who need to limit their workout time.  Of course, running more seems to build an even better defense.

If You Are Not a Runner, No Problem

Running is not for everyone.  Many people prefer a less physically demanding activity.  Riding a bike can be easier on the body but still get good results.  A Japanese study found that people who rode an exercise bike 10 minutes per day were happier and performed well on mentally challenging activities.  Mental and emotional health seem to go well with good physical health.  There are plenty of options for those who seek to have it all.

Make Good Choices in Planning

You don't have to knock yourself out with any of these small workouts.  While we may not like everything about an exercise, you can usually find some that are a little more appealing than others.  We have to personalize.  I have not always enjoyed exercises that I do.  As a matter of fact, I have really dreaded some of them.  Taking the time to find some that can work for me has paid off.  I can do something I enjoy, at least a little, and still work on my conditioning successfully.
