It's Race Time: Are You Ready?
By Virginia Laird
Races can be an exciting thing to participate in. With a growing popularity of family-friendly 5 Ks, it is no wonder that fall is a popular time to race. For many, it is preparing for a race that can be challenging. Although there are many who prefer to wake up and show up for a race, with little preparation, this is not in your best interest. Fitness experts are adamant that preparation for each race is necessary to ensure a reduced chance of injury. A few things that you can do to begin your race preparation include:
- Stretch every day
- Get plenty of sleep
- Start hydrating now
Stretch Every Day
Stretching plays an important role in making your race successful. Making time to race everyday can help release tension from the body and promote mobility. Those who skip out on this simple step become more vulnerable to injury that, at times, can be long-term interruptions to your race plans. It is suggested that you make time to stretch each day, when possible a couple of times each day.
Get Plenty of Sleep
Sleep is another priority you should adhere to when trying to properly prepare for racing. The body needs adequate sleep to function, avoid injury, and fight off illness. Research recommends that the average adult get at least six hours of sleep each night. However, there are plenty who require much more than this. For those who know how much sleep they need, giving yourself a bedtime is the best way to ensure you get the sleep you need.
Start Hydrating Now
Hydration is necessary when trying to promote wellness. This same proper hydration plays a huge role in the ability of the body to function at its best, especially when trying to exercise. There is research to suggest that proper hydration can help reduce stiffness in the muscles that is sure to make an appearance after a lengthy race. Maintaining proper hydration is necessary when trying to be at your best. For many, drinking adequate water is not as simple as it sounds. Instead, it takes a great deal of work for many. It is suggested that you should consume at least half of your body weight in ounces of water each day. Start today making this a priority.
As your race day approaches, now is the time to begin getting ready for your best race yet!
