Make Mousse Healthier With These Recipes
By Brandi Goodman
Mousse is often made as a light and fluffy dessert. It doesn't have the best nutrition, and there's lots of sugar and calories in the mix. That doesn't mean you have to miss out. You can make mousse healthier with the help of these recipes.
Avocado Chocolate Mousse
A rich and silky dessert is made from chocolate and avocado. The flesh of two ripe avocados is needed along with one-quarter cup of cocoa powder and one-quarter cup of Dutch cocoa. Almond milk, pure vanilla extract, a bit of salt, and pure maple syrup will also be needed. Everything can be combined in a blender for easy mixing.
Vegan Chocolate Mousse
Raw cocoa powder, vanilla extract, coconut milk, and coconut nectar are all you need for this recipe. Add your powder to your milk and then add in the extract. Pour in your nectar and whisk all ingredients together. You can add some nutrition to the dessert by topping it with nuts, berries, or both. It's a simple recipe that creates a creamy and smooth dessert.
Dairy-Free Strawberry Vanilla Mousse Parfait
This recipe is similar to the vegan one. You'll need coconut milk and raw agave nectar. Instead of the extract though, use an actual vanilla bean. You'll want to whisk your coconut milk to make it whipped and thick. Scrape the seeds into the whipped milk and add the nectar. Save one cup of this mixture for later. Create a strawberry puree using fresh strawberries. Be sure to run it through a fine mesh strainer so no seeds get into it. Add the puree into the remainder of your mixture. To make your parfait dessert, pipe in some strawberry mousse followed by a layer of blueberries and strawberry slices. Continue layering like this until the dish or cup is full. Finish it with a layer of the saved coconut mixture.
Low-Fat Vanilla Mousse
For an even easier option, use instant pudding and Cool Whip purchased from the store. You can use just three ingredients to create a low-fat vanilla mousse that tastes great yet is still low in calories. A sugar-free, fat-free box of vanilla instant pudding needs to be mixed with fat-free milk. You can then beat in a tub of fat-free Cool Whip and have a simple dessert that hits the spot.
