Diabetes and Socializing: Yes, You Still Can!

By Stephen R. Farris

Dealing with diabetes doesn't mean you have to be stuck at home all the time. Even though you have to monitor your diet, there are still ways to go out and enjoy a restaurant or catch a movie with your family and friends. There's no need to keep yourself cooped up.

Keep Carbs and Sugar in Check

It's Saturday night and the latest flick is showing at the movie theater. You've been dying to see it, but feel you'd be out of place watching the movie empty-handed while your friends indulge in all the goodies from the concession stand. While that buttery barrel of popcorn might be loaded with calories and unhealthy fat, it doesn't hurt to grab a little from your friends to snack on. Keep it at a minimum. And it's OK to wash it down with a diet soda. Most movie theaters offer a selection on a variety of beverages, including water.

Office Parties Can Be a Go!

The day of retirement has come for one of your co-workers. There's lots of food that includes cakes, pies, cookies, you know, lots of stuff loaded with sugar. That doesn't have to stop you either. While everybody else brings those things, you can bring foods to share that you normally eat and snack on at home. There's nothing wrong with staying with your nutrition goals and being a part of the office crowd at the same time.

Holiday Celebrations

Since it's that time of year, surely there's holiday parties scheduled on your calendar. Even though most holiday spreads feature high fat content foods and all those desserts gleaming with sugary content, it shouldn't hold you back from feasting and having a good time. Instead of taking a chance on those types of foods, grab something from the veggie and cheese trays. They're great alternatives and allow you to stay within your nutritional needs. Certain nuts are good to munch on as well for diabetics. If alcohol is present, then so is water and diet soda.

So get out and enjoy yourself this holiday season and throughout the year. Socialize with friends and family as much as you want now that you know what to look out for as far as nutrition and diabetes.
