3 Ways to Enjoy Good Winter Health
By Genevieve Cunningham
Texans aren't really known for their resilience to the cold. We like the warmth. We like the sun and the green grass. Of course, there are good things about the cold -- cozy clothes, comfort food, the holidays. But for the most part, the cold is harder to deal with for many. Pain often slips in, and staying healthy is a little more difficult. Luckily, there are things we can do to protect our health through the cold. Things we can do to keep our weight under control and our bodies in better condition. If you would like to enjoy good health through the winter, take a look at these tips to have in your winter healthcare plan.
Find an Indoor Workout Routine
One of the hardest parts about winter health is working out. If you normally work out outdoors, you probably don't feel like sweating in the cold. Or if you normally work out in a gym, you may not feel like leaving your warm home and trekking to your local fitness center. For days like this -- and really for any time of year -- you need a backup plan. Find an at-home workout, or perhaps a few, and keep them at the ready. This gives you a way to work out and stay fit without ever leaving your comfy room.
Have an Emergency Recipe
When it's cold outside, it's so tempting to reach for all of the comfort food. The soup and stew and chili. But comfort foods tend to be high in calories. Make sure that you have an emergency recipe or two to get you through the season. These might be quick and easy salads or a healthy pre-made soup option. When you don't feel like going to the trouble of cooking, use these quick, healthy recipes to fuel your body without extra calories.
Get Outside
Even though it's cold, it's still important to get outside. Luckily, Texas winters aren't unbearable. When it's a mild day, make sure that you're getting out and soaking in some sun. Getting enough sunshine will help keep your Vitamin D levels high and can also keep moodiness away. Even a few minutes per day can help keep you healthy until the sun is bright and warm with spring.
It's a little harder to stay healthy through the winter. The lack of sunlight and the chill winds do a number on many! But if you have a plan, you can definitely keep yourself well. Use these tips to protect yourself this winter, and move into the new year feeling better than ever before.
