Hang Holiday Decorations Without Discomfort

By Brandi Goodman

Decorating for the holidays is a common tradition in many households. Although it's typical, not everyone does it correctly. There's ways to hang holiday decorations without discomfort. With a few tips in mind, you can be sure to prevent any aches that would normally accompany getting your holiday decorations put up for the season.

Ask for Help

If you're one who usually hangs all the decorations alone it may be time to ask for help. The job will get done faster with two or more people tackling the chore. You're also a little less likely to get hurt since you have multiple people doing the work and you're not pushing your body too hard getting all of it done on your own.

Consider the Weather

You may be planning to hang up your decorations tonight or another day soon. If the weather isn't right on the day you hope to do them, however, then you should rethink your decision. It's important to consider the weather when you're ready for the decorations to go up. You don't want to put them up on a wet day when it's going to be slippery. You're far more likely to fall if the ground is wet from rain or snow. Look ahead at the weather forecast and find a day where mild weather will be present.

Keep Everything in Your Reach

Bending down to grab more decorations or extending your reach to get to them can result in a pulled muscle or ache from overextending. Be sure to keep everything you need right in your reach so you don't end up hurting yourself to get to it. If you need to go up a ladder this may mean having a tool belt around your waist so you can place the tools and equipment you need in it.

Wear the Right Shoes

The shoes you wear can spell disaster for your decorating. Wearing the wrong ones can make it easier to slip and fall. It's important to wear the right shoes, meaning ones that are comfortable, well-fitting, and supportive while also being non-slip.

Many families wait until the last weeks of the year to hang their holiday decorations. If you're one of the ones who have waited, be sure to take these tips into consideration so you can hang your decorations pain-free. You don't want to be laid up on Christmas because you hurt your back getting the tree into the house or pulled a muscle reaching the roof.
