Common Injuries Athletes Receive
By Randi Morse
No matter who you are or what your personal tastes are, it's almost guaranteed that there is some sport you enjoy playing. Some people enjoy team sports like basketball and baseball, while others enjoy what is often considered to be more individual sports, like swimming or gymnastics. Playing sports can be great fun and is definitely a fantastic way to get exercise. But they can also be the cause a serious bodily injury. This is especially true as we age. The older we get, the more prone to injury our muscles and bones are.
Common Injuries
One of the most predictable things about sports injuries is that they are, in general, predictable. Things like pulled muscles, sprains, strains, and joint problems are often seen in people who enjoy sports due to the wear and tear that our bodies endure in order to indulge in our love of the game. This is especially true if you don't take time to properly stretch before your game. Muscles and joints that are not warmed up correctly are much more prone to injury.
Common Treatments
One of the good things about most sports injuries is that the treatment protocol is generally similar and is generally easily accomplished at home. Over-the-counter medications, like Ibuprofen and Tylenol, are often prescribed to help reduce any swelling in the injured area. Heat and ice are used alternately. While ice helps remove swelling, heat helps loosen the joints, tendons, and muscles, providing pain relief. Compression is also regularly utilized as a treatment option, especially for strains or sprains.
Chiropractic Care
There are times when a random injury can occur during a sports game that could not be prevented. With proper stretching and proper warm-up techniques, however, a large number of sports injuries can be avoided. Regular chiropractic care has also been shown not only to help speed up the healing of sports injuries, but also to help athletes avoid getting injured in the first place.
