Color Meals for the Heart
By Tom Herrin
When selecting foods, it is always best to have variety. Not only does this count as far as basic nutrients but also the colors of the foods. Making decisions about foods to include in a diet can be made much simpler than having to do a lot of studying about it. A much easier way to do this is to use a variety of colors. Believe it or not, having many different colors in a diet can go a long way toward supporting good health. It can take the burden out of decision-making.
The Blues in Foods Is Not Bad
One of the colors that can offer a boost to health is blue. It is true that there is not an overabundance of foods of that color, but the ones that are can pack a real punch for good health. Actually when thinking of blue, the color purple must be thrown in as well. Either of these is considered to be in the same category. These foods are high in phytonutrients. They are well known for their ability to help fight free radicals. Many people recognize them as good in a fight against some cancers and a few other issues. The foods could include blueberries, plums, some figs, and a few others.
Yellow Is Great
The yellow foods are generally full of fiber. They also help to protect the skin, provide a barrier against heart disease, and they are famously good for the eyes. These foods are easy to spot. While they may not all be pure yellow, some may appear more of an orange. Carrots, squash, oranges, and several others that are easily identified fall into this group. They are a great addition to any meal.
Adding Color Also Adds Visual Appeal
Anytime we have more color in our meals, it can make them appear much more attractive. I always prefer a meal with some color rather than looking at something with a lot of white and brown or gray. If nothing else, I enjoy a good salad with all kinds of veggies. We don't have to stop with blues and yellows either. Greens and reds added to those whites can make a meal healthy and likely full of vitamins. A good thing is that adding color is easy and relatively inexpensive. It also gives you an opportunity to acquire a taste for more foods. It is pretty enjoyable.
