Healthy Meals May Be More So in Color

By Tom Herrin

For some people, meals may be pretty plain, in that they may contain pretty much the same foods day after day, week after week.  A lot of people get stuck in that kind of routine, or maybe grind.  Making those meals a little healthier may be easier than many may realize.  For someone who does not have the time to study about nutrition, they can accomplish the same thing by simply adjusting the color in their meals.  That is, make sure that there is a good variety of colors available in foods each time they sit down to eat.

Everyone Knows About Greens

For years, lots of people were told that they needed to eat more greens.  It was often a battle to get kids to try some of them.  It could be a matter of parents serving the wrong kind of greens or failing to introduce them at the right time.  Too many parents almost hold their noses as they tell their kids to eat them.  That is not the best sales technique.  Some greens are thought to do anything from repairing cells to boosting energy to helping bones and then some.  A few examples of green foods are broccoli, kale, green grapes, kiwi, avocado and more.

What Do You Think About Blues?

It seems that in recent years, blue foods have gotten a lot of attention.  Even though some of these foods are actually more of a purple, this group has a good reputation for their ability to help fight free radicals and inflammation.  They also are believed to have some benefits against some cancers.  A few of these foods include blueberries, purple cabbage, eggplant, figs, plums and lots more.  Adding them to meals may really liven up the occasion.

How Many Colors Can You Pack in One Meal?

I like to see just how much variety I can have in a meal.  Color alone seems to add a touch to the meals that makes them a little more fun.  Getting the entire family involved can make everyone feel a sense of ownership.  As they see and taste their contribution, they may become a little more motivated.  It can be fun as well as healthy.  We like to do this in our family to see just what each member can contribute.  For some, it can be a pretty good contest.
