The Big-Brain Benefits of Puzzles

By Donna Stark

Do you miss the good old days? Do you remember walking to the local ice cream shop for an Italian soda when you were a kid? And spending your days playing outside (well, at least until the street lights came on)? Life seemed so much simpler back then, didn't it? We grew our own food, we sat under trees and read books, and to pass the time when we had time to pass, we puzzled. How long has it been that you sat down and completed a puzzle? Can't remember? Well, why don't you pull one out today? It's a great way to relive those memories and challenge your brain in the process. Take a look.

Full-Brain Workout

You're not just working on putting a picture together, you are giving your brain a full workout too! Solving puzzles exercise both the left and right side of your brain, which means you are getting twice the benefit when you sit down to do one.

Memory

Working on puzzles can help to reinforce the connections between your brain cells which can have a positive impact on your short-term memory skills. How? Well, as you are completing the puzzle, you are remembering the shapes, colors, and sizes of the pieces in the set. Can you imagine how long it would take to finish if you weren't using those skills?

Problem-Solving Skills

How many problem-free days have you ever had? Probably not too many, so you may be happy to hear that you can strengthen your problem-solving skills by completing a puzzle. Puzzles require us to think critically, work by trial and error, and design a different approach if the one we are using doesn't seem to be working.

Attention to Detail

You may not need a lot of attention to detail when you are helping your toddler put a 10-piece puzzle together, but you do when sitting in front of one that includes hundreds of tiny pieces that all look alike. From noticing the tiniest change in size to the slightest variation in color, it is easy to see how puzzles can strengthen your attention to detail.

Stress Levels

Sitting down with a cup of tea and a puzzle in front of you is a great way to relax after a busy day, and since puzzles require all of your focus, you will be less inclined to think about all of the other stressors in your day while completing one.

Get Your Puzzle On!

Now that you are no longer puzzled about the benefits of puzzles, it's time to pull one out and get started! There is no better way to pass the time.
