5 At-Home Fitness Ideas

By Brandi Goodman

Your gym is closed! What can you do now? You have plenty of options for fitness even if you can't get to a gym. Try at-home fitness ideas instead so you can still get your sweat on and maintain your physical activity.

Follow Along With Fitness Videos

Lots of trainers offer fitness videos for people to follow along with at home. You don't even have to purchase a DVD anymore. You can look on Facebook, YouTube, and other social media sites to find virtual video sessions. You may have to pay for some, but others are offered for free. Just watch the videos and follow along with what the instructors tell you.

Create a Home Gym

If you have the space, now's the time to create a home gym. You don't have to rely on public gyms where everyone else goes. A gym in your own home can give you a quiet place to work out when you want. Include whichever equipment you like best. Just having some free weights and a stair-stepper is a good start before you can get bigger equipment in.

Walk Around the Block

A walk is a great workout. It will get you outside to soak up some Vitamin D while giving you plenty of time to burn calories. Your lower body can get strengthened tremendously just from short daily walks. Take a walk around your block -- just don't forget to bring your water bottle along.

Get a Punching Bag

Boxing provides a great workout. You'll really get the chance to improve your arm strength and burn plenty of calories in the process. A punching bag is all you need to make the most of a boxing workout. You can find a standalone bag or get one that needs to be suspended from above.

Be a Kid Again

Swinging, climbing on a jungle gym, jump roping, hula hooping and playing hopscotch are just a few of the traditions kids continue. You can be a kid again and try all these things as well. Get outside on the swing-set with your kids. Play hopscotch with them. Try to jump rope. You'll have a blast and work up a sweat.

The gym isn't the only place you can get a good workout. There's plenty you can do at home to get in some fitness time and burn calories. Give one or more of these options a try or come up with your own plan and maintain your fitness routine.
