What to Do When Your Motivation Goes Astray

By Stephen R. Farris

Have you ever found yourself stuck in a rut to the point that you lack the motivation to work out? It could be a number of things that make you feel this way. Maybe it's work-related or health-related. It could be stress from your home environment or just plain old hustle and bustle of life itself.

Whatever the case may be, there's a few things you can try and do to get yourself up and going and become more motivated to start working out again.

Looking Within

First off, if you're feeling less motivated to work out, then it might be time to sit down and take a closer examination of your inner self. Ask yourself "what is my goal for exercising? Is it for weight loss?" Maybe it's to fit into some new clothes or it could be for your overall health. Revamp your goals a little to help put you back on track.

Have a Backup Plan

It's really easy to avoid your workout, especially if you forget your gym clothes. Try this idea. Put an extra bag with gym clothes and an extra pair of tennis shoes in the trunk of your car, just in case you forget to grab your regular bag leaving home for work. You will need to remember to switch out bags when you get back home after your workout.

Use Notes

It's not a bad idea to hang little post-it notes around the house, such as the door of the refrigerator, the bathroom mirror or the front/back door. Write down a reminder to work out on them, or jot a piece of motivational sayings that will get you in the mood.

Listen to Some Music

Exercising with the same routine can get a little boring at times. It might be time to switch things up a little; however, if it's the "thing" you feel comfortable doing, then invest in a portable music device, or download a musical playlist to your smartphone. Pop in some earbuds and jam out while on the treadmill, walking outdoors, or riding your bike.

Talk with your local chiropractor, who can provide you with tips and suggestions that might help you with your motivational problems. Plus, they can help give you relief from some of those aches and pains you might be feeling after workouts.
