Getting a Handle on Your Stress

By Donna Stark

Feeling a little extra stressed lately? You're not alone! A lot of us are stressed these days and your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic want you to know that it is completely normal! From problems at work to relationship difficulties to illness to debt, stress can certainly stem from a wide range of issues, but no matter what your trigger is, there are some ways to keep the balance in your life. Take a look at a few of the most contributing factors to the stress in our lives.

Social Media

Sure, social media is fun, it fills the time, it keeps you connected, but unless you can turn it off for a week without breaking into a sweat the first hour after doing so, it may not be as healthy as you think. If you are getting hourly "breaking news" notifications, if you are constantly checking what your friends are posting, or if you are comparing your appearance, intelligence, material possessions, relationships, or career to others who are on social media as well, do yourself a favor and cut some of that back. You may end up feeling less stressed and anxious if you do.

A Sedentary Lifestyle

Your body was designed to move, so if you want to keep the balance in your life, you have to stay physically active! Physical activity can range from a simple walk in the morning to a full-body, hard-core, intense workout in the evening. It doesn't really matter what you do as long as you are not sitting on the couch watching television all day. Exercise is a great stress-reducer so plan on adding at least 30 minutes of it into each and every one of your days.

Sleep Deprivation

Not getting the recommended amount of sleep, especially night after night after night, is one sure way to feel out of control and completely stressed out! Your body uses the time it is at rest to repair and regenerate itself. Your immunity is boosted, your energy reserves are filled, and your stress levels are reduced. It is vital to your overall health and wellness that you prioritize your sleep. Establish a consistent nighttime routine and commit to a healthy sleep schedule. It won't take long before you see a huge difference in how you can manage your days.

Less-Stressed Days

You may not be able to eradicate all of the stress in your life, but with some simple changes to your everyday routine, it's quite possible to get a handle on a lot of it. So take a hard look at your life and start identifying those triggers! It's time to get serious about dealing with them!
