Keep Your Spring Stress to a Minimum
By Brandi Goodman
The Seasonal Affective Disorder that tends to hit in the winter can still go strong in the spring. On days when you're kept cooped up in the house due to the weather or closings around town, it can really take a toll on your mental health. You need to find ways to keep your spring stress to a minimum for improved well-being.
Deep Clean Your House
Spring cleaning is a common thing for a reason. It's a great stress reliever for those who have become overwhelmed by the clutter that's taken over. Spring is the perfect time to do a deep clean of your home and purge the place of any unnecessary items. The weather starts to warm up so you can open your windows and let the fresh air in as you get your cleaning done. You also tend to accumulate items during the holiday seasons, and spring marks the end of most gift-giving holidays.
Keep a Journal
A journal is a great way to get your thoughts out. You don't want to keep them in your head and allow them to eat away at your mind. During unique times especially, it's ideal to keep a journal you can look back on to see how far you've come since. It will help to keep you sane and give you some positives to look at down the road. Write down your positive thoughts and feelings about the time and talk about what good you have in your life.
Turn Photos Into Postcards
Going through your old photos can also be beneficial. You'll get to reminisce on some good times while getting something organized. Turn those photos into postcards if you can or simply send them in an envelope and you can help others in your life get some joy as well.
Set Some Goals
Lots of people set goals for themselves in the new year and tend to forget them by spring. When plans change as well, it can be hard to stay on track. Set some new goals for yourself instead. Make a list of daily goals you want to accomplish around your home or for yourself, such as getting the bedroom closet organized, cooking a healthy dinner, and doing a workout. You can also set an overall weekly or monthly goal, such as getting the entire basement de-cluttered or finishing a book.
Your mental well-being should always be a priority no matter the season. Get a start this spring by working on keeping your stress to a minimum. With some coping techniques in place, you can manage your spring stress and have some solutions for future seasons when your mental health is taking a toll on your overall wellness.
