Back-Saving Gardening Tips

By Sara Butler

It's time to get out and dig in the dirt -- something many people have been waiting all winter long to do. While you may be eager to get out and make your lawn and garden beautiful, the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic want to remind you of some important tips to help save your back while you garden.

Stretch It Out

Stretching is essential before any activity and gardening is no different! Take the time before you put on your gardening gloves to limber up and warm your muscles up, too. This will make you more comfortable as you garden and reduce the likelihood of injury. Focus on stretching your biceps, triceps, hamstrings and back before getting down and dirty in your garden.

Use the Right Tools

You probably love getting down as close to the ground as possible to smell the dirt and see what you're doing, but your back may not agree. You don't have to give up getting down low but you should try to mix it up by using back-friendly tools that allow you to stay upright as you garden.

There are telescopic and long-handled tools on the market that allow for precisely this. They allow you to stay in a good posture so you don't overwork your back. They're also a great option for those who have limited range of motion as well as those who have trouble getting up and down.

You may also want to consider container gardening if you have mobility issues. These raised containers allow you to easily reach the things you want to grow. These containers can usually be set at a height you find comfortable.

Change Position Frequently

It's really easy to get so into what you're doing in the garden that you lose track of time. You only realize how long you've been in one position when you go to move to another and your body feels stiff or painful.

Avoid this fate by using a timer when you're outside to go off every 30 minutes. Let this serve as a reminder to get up and move, perhaps throwing in a few stretches for good measure. This will help to prevent stiffness and pain and help with circulation, too.

Getting out in the garden is great for your health, but it can be hard on your back. If you need more tips to keep your back healthy this spring, talk to the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic.
