Why a Morning Routine is So Important
By Genevieve Cunningham
Unless you're a natural morning person, you likely struggle with the earliest part of the day. It's probably a challenge just to get out of bed. And then breakfast, exercise, and other healthy habits -- forget it! Unfortunately for all the morning haters out there, your morning routine is incredibly important to your overall health and happiness. Don't believe it? Take a look at why the morning is so important, plus some tips for starting your day off on the right foot.
It Sets the Tone
The morning can set up the rest of your day. If your morning is rushed and frustrating, the rest of your day is likely to follow a similar pattern. If your morning is calm and peaceful, you're more likely to carry that with you throughout the day. If you want a good day, it's important to set your morning up to begin in a fashion that feels good to you.
Science Backs Morning Productivity
While we can't always help whether we're a morning person or a night owl, science backs the idea that morning people are more productive. It might be because they get a head start on work. Or it might be because mornings tend to be the most productive time of day anyway -- and these people are already awake and ready to go. Whatever the reason, getting yourself moving in the morning might help you be more productive at work and in your personal life.
Tips for Better Mornings
Starting your morning off on the right foot requires a routine. This is a set of habits that helps to wake us up and get us going. A few tips for setting a healthy routine might include:
Get enough sleep - The more sleep you get, the better you're going to feel upon waking. While it's not easy to go to bed early, doing so will help keep your mornings more upbeat and productive.
Do what works for you - A morning routine is a personal thing. One person may prefer hot coffee, the news, and a quick stretch. Another person may need hot tea and a few minutes with a book. And still another may prefer a rigorous exercise routine. The key is to find what feels good to you and your body, and then to do that every day to get yourself in the right frame of mind for the rest of the day.
Find soothing habits - No matter what you like in the mornings, it's a good idea to have at least one soothing habit. Something that calms your nerves and eases your mind. Something that makes the day feel peaceful. It might be a walk in nature, some nice music, or a podcast on your way to the office. Find something that puts you in a good mood and include it in your morning routine.
Morning routines are more important than we realize. They can make or break our mornings -- which can then make or break the whole day! Use these tips to set up the perfect morning routine, and use that routine to start each day with a boost in health, happiness, and productivity.
