Always on the Menu: These Fruits and Veggies Win

By Genevieve Cunningham

Do you make healthy eating difficult? Do you think about everything you're giving up? Are you worried about the restrictions? It's normal to feel this way when you first begin a healthier diet, but the truth is that it doesn't have to be difficult at all. In fact, it can be really easy -- and more importantly, it can be delicious! All you need to get started is a list of foods that are always good for you. When you find yourself in a bind, you can reach for one of these staples. Sounds easy, right? It is! If you need a go-to list for your kitchen, take a look at these fruits and veggies that are always a good choice.

Cucumber

One of the best things about cucumbers is that they're over 95 percent water. When you consume plenty of cucumbers, you're helping to hydrate your body and keep it refreshed. Luckily, cucumbers taste extremely fresh and add just a bit of crunch to your diet. Slice them up for a salad, eat them raw, or dice them with other veggies for a snack. You can't go wrong with this watery, fresh veggie choice.

Melons

Melons are a great choice for the summer months because they're fresh and available. But if you can find them at other times of the year, go for it! Melons are also high in water, so you'll keep your body hydrated once again. But they're also stocked full of Vitamin C -- a wonderful immune booster. Plus, they come with the added benefit of satisfying a sweet tooth. If you're a fan of sweets but you're looking for something healthy at the same time, melons are a good option.

Berries

Berries are always a good choice. You've probably heard by now that berries are full of antioxidants, and it's true! The antioxidants in berries are good for the skin, the heart, the brain, and health overall. Add some berries to your breakfast or have some for a snack to get the benefits in little increments every day.

Leafy Greens

Perhaps one of the best vegetables for your body is an array of dark leafy greens. Kale, spinach, lettuce. These kinds of veggies are full of fiber, vitamins, and they're extremely low calorie. You can throw them in a salad, bake them (kale) into chips, add them to a wrap of some sort, or do whatever you like with them. They're great for digestion and weight management. If you want a veggie that you can eat year round for better health, it might be best to start with these leafy greens.

You can make healthy eating difficult if you really want to, but it's just not necessary. All you need is a determined mind and a list of go-to foods. Use these fruit and veggie choices as a good starting place, and you'll improve your health and diet in no time at all.
