Staying Home May Build Health and Relationships
By Tom Herrin
In a time in which the world seems to have been turned upside down, people are staying home in droves. It is not at all the first time in which this has happened. The world today is largely reliant on technology more than at any time in the past. While the circumstances are dire for many, it can also be a time in which families may be able to make the most out of their circumstances as they go through this process of slowly re-opening. Spending time at home can be a great opportunity for family members to work on improving overall health and unity. If all can get on the same page, they may be able to become stronger physically and emotionally.
Pull up a Chair
At one time, many people spent lots of quality time together at the table. It was often understood that everyone was expected to come to dinner at the same time and remain there until everyone was finished and dismissed. It became a great time for families to have conversation and other interactions. It is amazing what may be learned in a fairly casual time during and following a meal. Family members may be more open and understanding of one another. It may be a great time to learn to listen. This is something that many parents can do to build a better connection with their children
Family Activities Have No Boundaries
Too many times, people seek to place rules on everything they do. It does not have to be the case. Anyone may be able to contribute to the pile. Sitting down together and creating may seem like something new to many. Puzzles are always good. For us, the holidays became a time of no set bedtimes or anything else. It was not unusual to stay up all night pursuing something as simple as a puzzle. When doing them, it is easy to get lost in casual conversation and searching for that one special piece. Another thing that many work at is to have something for the little ones. We keep a box of sidewalk chalk in our carport. All of the grandkids enjoy seeing what they can do to top the other.
Don't Forget to Exercise
As we find ourselves more confined, it is critical to continue to get good exercise. It may be something as simple as allowing different family members to lead a session for 10 minutes or so. If the weather permits, and you have a yard, playing a simple outdoor game can do wonders. It is important that each of us get quality exercise, especially when we are cooped up together. We need the outlets to protect our physical and mental health, too. Take this opportunity to empower yourself by taking charge of what you can. You and your family have everything to gain.
