Make Time at Home Be Quality Time

By Tom Herrin

When life deals people unexpected hands, it can catch them by surprise.  No matter how much planning people do, they are not always able to anticipate every possible scenario.  Spending a longer length of time near home can seem like a shock to many.  It is certainly something that almost no one is prepared for.  The truth is, it can happen -- as has been recently proven.  When it does, it can challenge many families as to their ability to function in such circumstances.  The good news is that it can provide a great opportunity for them to rise to the occasion and grow closer as a family.

Take Time to Play Brain Games

Most people played games and worked various kinds of puzzles as children.  Many forgot all about it once they became what they considered to be responsible adults.  When they are thrown into a situation in which they are spending some time together in a close environment, it may be a way to open the door to getting back to these things.  Games or puzzles can challenge the mind and raise the level of thinking.  When they do this as a group, people are able to learn more about one another.

Stretch a Little

It is important to remember that exercise is an important part of maintaining overall health.  Taking time to develop and follow some kind of regular routine of exercise is a vital way to support physical health.  It may work well for children to be involved in family.  Having different members lead the daily exercises can be an effective way of getting them to buy in and build a commitment.  Daily exercise was one of things that was done by the miners in Chile in 2010 when they had the cave-in and struggled to survive until their rescue.  It is critical for anyone, especially when their movement is otherwise restricted.

Do a Little Bonding

Most of us rarely spend enough time listening to other family members.  This is often the case with our children.  When we listen, it goes quite a long way toward improving our communication.  It may be surprising how much this will increase with the passage of time.  Have fun with the small things.  We have found that if we all eat at the same time, our table conversation will get better and be more productive.  It may be a great way to turn something difficult into something good while we await complete return to normal.
