Exercise Care in Getting Out

By Tom Herrin

Times have been difficult for many the last month or so.  Now that people are beginning to get out more, it is important to remember there is still some hazard out there.  It is not possible to flip a switch and have everything back to normal.  When a virus comes around that people have never before encountered, it is possible that no one has any immunity.  Even though some may have slightly greater resistance than others, some of these infections can be devastating.  During the Spanish flu pandemic a hundred years ago, the prime targets appeared to be the very young and seemingly healthy.  Some believed this was due to some slight immunity that may be carried by older adults due to a flu virus that had come around in the late nineteenth century.  Making the most out of the present situation carefully may be best.

Talk Freely

A more conservative approach to all of this is to cautiously go about doing more.  The other side of this is to continue to be home more.  While doing this, it can be a wonderful time to do a few little things.  Play some games, do some puzzles, make something together.  All of these can help to contribute to opening up quality conversation.  As this happens, people may be able to gain a better perspective about others.  Becoming better listeners can be the key to all of this.  Refraining from taking the opportunity to lecture children may help avoid building walls.

Keep on Keeping on

If people already exercise, they will do well to find a way of doing it with whoever lives with them.  Looking for, and accepting, new and creative ways to do this may make for better communication.  Even things such as doing yard work together, or building something, may get people moving.  That is the key, and if they will form some good habits now, they may keep them going after things really do return to a more normal way of operating.

Remember Who Is Important

Too many times, we tend to sell family members short.  They each have important contributions to make.  Spending time sitting, listening, and sharing can bring everyone closer.  We have always tried to spend as much mealtime together as possible.  We have particularly enjoyed sitting together and having a conversation about whatever pops into our heads.  It is a great time to learn more about one another.  It seems to bring us closer.
