Keep Your Kids Active Throughout the Year
By Brandi Goodman
Children need a lot of physical activity to burn off energy, keep their mental health in check, and grow their bodies to be strong and healthy. Whether they're getting some exercise at school or not, you still need to make sure they're having time for fitness when they're at home. Keep your kids active throughout the year with these options.
Combine Screen Time and Exercise
Your children can get some screen time in, but combine exercise with it. Instead of just letting them sit and play a typical video game, for example, you can play an interactive game with them instead. PlayStation Move and Xbox Kinect offer different dance games and other options that gets you up and moving.
Sign Them Up for Sports
Encourage your child to pick a sport they're interested in and sign them up. You can speak with their school about sports teams or find a city league that's taking students. Never sign them up for something they aren't actually interested in though. It may make them want to rebel and not participate.
Make It a Family Affair
You can't expect your kids to exercise if you're not doing so as well. You need to make it a family affair and encourage your kids to get up and move. Take a family bike ride. Go hiking. Go for a swim. Play with your kids at the park. You can even throw a Frisbee or kick a ball around. There's plenty of options that all of you can do together. It provides an opportunity for some family bonding as well.
Encourage Household Participation
Chores are a great way to get in some exercise. You're still moving your body and working your muscles when you're vacuuming or watering the lawn. Encourage your kids to participate in household chores so they're helping out around the house while also getting in some physical activity. Don't make them do something they loathe, but let them pick out a few things they don't mind doing and have them lend a hand.
Children's health is of extreme importance, and exercise is part of that. Make sure you're always incorporating fitness into their daily routines so they can be as healthy as possible both mentally and physically. Join in on the exercise with them so you get in some great bonding time and encourage healthy habits.
