3 Tips for Running Safely in the Heat
By Genevieve Cunningham
The heat is coming. Ready or not, the hottest part of spring and then the summer is quickly approaching. While there are a lot of good things to be said about spring and summer, the heat can be an unbearable aspect. And if you work out outdoors -- especially if you run -- the heat is of even greater concern. Luckily, there are precautions we can take to make outdoor workouts easier. If you want to safely run through the heat of the year, take a look at these tips to incorporate into your routine.
Choose the Right Time of Day
When it's hot outside, you have to be wise about the time of day at which you run. You just won't be able to run at the hottest point of the day. Instead, you may have to wake up early and run or wait until it's close to sundown. This will feel better to your body, and it will be safer as well. You may have to adjust your schedule a bit, but this approach will allow you to keep up the running habit while still keeping yourself healthy and out of the heat.
Be Prepared
When the weather isn't cooperating, it's really important to be prepared. You'll need to make sure you have plenty of water. You'll need sunscreen and sunglasses and cool clothing. And because the heat can make you feel a bit out of sorts, you might also take a small snack. Being prepared might keep you out of an unhealthy or dangerous situation. And with the incoming heat, now is the perfect time to practice your preparedness before you start your run.
Slow It Down
When it's hot outside, you may not be able to run as quickly as you once could. You may have to slow it down quite a bit. You may have to walk and then run and then walk again. And all of that is OK! Just keep moving, and don't worry about breaking any records during the heat of the summer. Slow down, stick with it, and you can reach for new goals when the weather is more comfortable.
Running in the heat can be both uncomfortable and dangerous. It's important to adjust your routine to meet the demands of the season. Use these tips to maintain your running routine in a safe way all summer long.
