Plan Your Picnic Around Diet and Exercise
By Brandi Goodman
A picnic is a favorite summer pastime for many. Not everyone thinks about nutrition and exercise when they're planning their picnic, however. It's better to pack a nutritious meal that will fuel the body rather than one that will leave you feeling sluggish and unable to continue on any adventures you were hoping to take. Plan your picnic around diet and exercise for the best experience.
Make It a Far Walk
Don't settle for the closest patch of grass to your car. Make it a far walk so you have to get some exercise in to get to your picnic location. Find a quiet location within the woods for a peaceful picnic without others around. At the very least, make your way toward the farthest picnic table in the area so you can get in some steps.
Picnic On the Water
You don't have to have a picnic on land. Take it out on the water by heading out on a boat, canoe, or other watercraft. You can sit and enjoy a meal as you bask in the tranquility of the calm water. You'll get plenty of exercise on your way out there and back, especially if you're paddling.
Make a Grain Salad
Energy is necessary if you plan on engaging in any physical activity. You need whole grains to help keep your body fueled. A grain salad is a great solution. Mix farro and fried shallots with nuts, leafy greens, cheese, or fruits for a customized option. You can even add grilled chicken for extra protein. Box it up and put it in your basket.
Bottled Water
Don't bring along caffeinated drinks or juice boxes for your picnic. Bottled water is the best option. It keeps you hydrated and ensures everyone can quench their thirst when needed. Other options will only add sugar and calories to your meal -- along with dehydrating you quickly.
Pack Roll-Ups Instead of Sandwiches
A sandwich is a common picnic item. Many are full of more calories and carbs than you need, though. Pack some homemade roll-ups instead. Using a whole grain tortilla, fill the roll-ups with avocado, chicken, and peppers for a nutritious bite.
Diet and exercise should be considered on your picnic -- always. It's important to eat nutritious foods and get plenty of physical activity if you hope to maintain your well-being. You can still have a great time, and maintain your energy levels to ensure you can enjoy your adventures.
