Preventing Back Pain When You Have Scoliosis
By Brandi Goodman
Scoliosis Awareness Month in June encourages early detection. It's important to spot this condition early so you can put a plan in place to help prevent further problems down the line. With some tips in mind, you can prevent back pain even when you have scoliosis.
Core Strengthening Exercises
You need a strong core if you hope to keep your body balanced. This takes a lot of strain off the back and helps you to get some relief from scoliosis pain. Start with some stretches and try a few yoga positions that focus on the core.
Back Strengthening Exercises
When you work to strengthen your core, you may strengthen your back in the process. Even still, you should try some specific back strengthening exercises to help free yourself from some of the discomfort your condition can cause. Try a simple bridge where you lay on the floor and lift your hips off the ground. Leg lifts can help as well.
Wear a Back Brace
If you're feeling particularly sore, a back brace may come in handy. A brace of this kind can help to hold your spine in place so you aren't able to twist and turn as freely as you could before. Without the ability to make sudden movements that can lead to pain, you're more likely to give your spine time to recuperate after an especially tough day.
Hydrotherapy
Water is great for helping pain. Hydrotherapy uses water as a way to manipulate the body and allow you to exercise more freely without the harshness of land. Water is buoyant and helps you feel lighter and free. Your body won't be absorbing shock as it does when you attempt to exercise on a hard floor with gravity pulling you down. Moving freely in the water can help to strengthen your pain and lessen the discomfort caused by your condition.
Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic cannot treat scoliosis itself. What it can do is help to strengthen the spine, improve the central nervous system, and address other symptoms you may be experiencing. With other problems out of the way that may be the actual cause of your discomfort, you may notice an improvement in the way you feel.
Scoliosis can put significant strain on the spine. You may feel mild pain or have severe daily discomfort. Do what you can to prevent back pain so you can live well even with this condition. There's lots of options that can help.
