Our Activity Should Not Harm Us
By Tom Herrin
Sometimes the old sayings ring very true, then sometimes they sound more like wives' tales. For those who invest themselves in getting in shape, it may be important to ignore the saying about no pain, no gain. While it sounds good, it is obviously referring to the notion of pushing themselves far. The last thing anyone needs in a workout is an injury. If they get one while exercising, they run the risk of backing up and having to start over. That tends to be deflating and can cause people to lose their motivation. Avoiding injuries is a much better approach to forming any kind of good program.
Water, Water, Water
People can usually get too much of anything, but water may be the exception. Unless it is some kind of extreme case, there is no real limit on water. Far too many people drink too little and suffer the consequences in their health as a result. For those who intend to exercise, drinking more water is critical. Many may fail to realize that drinking plenty before, during, and after activity will all count. It is possible to suffer from some kind of dehydration without ever knowing there is a problem. That may be headed off with a little effort to drink more.
Be in Tune With the Conditions
Especially for those who are exercising outdoors, awareness of the temperature, and humidity can make all of the difference. Without knowing, it is easy to become overheated and ill in a big hurry. On the other hand, in the cold weather, it takes some pretty keen judgment to know when they have the right kinds of clothes on. If the clothes are too heavy, one may get too warm too soon if, but if they are too light, it may be difficult to maintain a proper body temperature. Feeling chilled for a long period of time can be bad.
Feel Good About the Program
All of us need to have a positive feeling about what we do to make ourselves healthier. A good program needs to fit us individually. Doing something just because someone else has had success with it is not good enough. We have to own it. As we do this, we need to understand the best ways to prevent injury. A successful program should serve us well and continue to help us feel motivated.
