Chiropractic Tips for 4 Common Summer Activities

By Brandi Goodman

You're probably planning on spending your summer enjoying all your favorite activities. Camping, boating, and swimming are on many people's lists. There will of course be some yard work to get done as well. Don't leave yourself debilitated when you take on all these tasks. You may have fun for a while, but it can quickly lead to pain if you aren't careful. Keep some chiropractic tips in mind for your common summer activities so you can complete them without feeling aches.

Camping

Lots of people enjoy camping in the summer months. Many end up with a backache, however, because they're stuck sleeping on the ground. Make sure you bring an air mattress or cot so you can keep your spine supported while you sleep. Roughing it on the ground with a sleeping bag just doesn't work well when you get older or already experience back pain.

Boating

A day spent on the water can be exhilarating. It can also lead to back pain when the waves that crash against the vessel cause you to swerve and sway against the sides. Make sure you're bracing for any waves that come and keeping your abs tight so you can remain upright. It will prevent all the bumps and bruises that boating sometimes leaves you with.

Swimming

Swimming is a great option if you're looking to cool down. It also offers physical activity that can really get you in shape. You need to stretch before you swim, though, if you hope to prevent pain or injury. Swimmer's shoulder is a common complaint that you want to avoid. Stretch out your arms, neck, back, and legs for the best prevention.

Yard Work

Summer isn't just for fun, unfortunately. You probably have some yard work that needs to get done in the very least. You'll have regular intervals of mowing. You may need to clean up some weeds. Perhaps you have mole hills or other spots dug out by animals to handle. Just be sure not to hurt your back in the midst of it all. Keep chiropractic tips in mind so you can tackle your outdoor chores without feeling sore after. Wear a sturdy pair of athletic shoes. Avoid twisting your back. Lift with your knees if you have to pick anything up. It's also important to break up the tasks and pace yourself. Don't try to get it all done at once.

No matter which activities you're completing, be it yard work or something more enjoyable, you're going to need to keep chiropractic tips in mind. You don't want to damage your back because you weren't being careful. You'll have a fun-filled summer that's ache-free if you think about how you're moving through it. Still left feeling sore?
