Start Treating Yourself a Whole Lot Better

By Sandy Schroeder

In a chaotic world it is way too easy to put yourself at the bottom of the list, but when you do, your health and happiness can be impacted.  I know because I have done this many times.

When family issues come up, home tasks need to be done, and work and financial issues surge, I find myself caving and hanging in there to get everything done. At the same time, I forget to exercise, breathe deeply, or treat myself to small daily pleasures.

I can do this for a while, but eventually it catches up with me and I begin to tire easily, snap at everyone, and catch every cold that comes long. I have weakened myself mentally and physically.

If you can relate, you may want to take steps to turn things around to start treating yourself better. People such as the GreaterGood.com Science Center suggest practicing self-compassion as you take better care of yourself

Treat yourself like you would a friend - Take a moment to listen to your own complaints and issues as you consider the things you need most.  Don't dismiss your situation or criticize your efforts. Instead do everything that you can to find out what will make your daily life better. Take the time to research new resources and find the products and services that will make life easier. New exercise equipment or upgraded computer devices may improve your life.

Steal some good ideas - Talk to friends and family and read and research things that are happening right now to to reduce work pressures, expand healthy diets or implement new ways to connect with the world. You may discover new ideas about people, pets, or projects that make life a whole lot better.

Practice mindfulness - Learn how to spend time sitting still and breathing deeply as you let your thoughts stream by unchecked and unjudged. Later you may feel much more clear-headed and calm as you move ahead with your day.

Take a look around you - All of those problems that seem to be weighing you down may be happening to lots of other people too. Financial gaps, health fears, and family demands are very common. Take the time to talk with friends, neighbors and co-workers to find out how they cope.

Finally, exercise your body and your sense of humor, make time for little daily pleasures and treats, and find ways to vent. Start journaling, walking daily, or biking on the weekends to lift your spirits and keep looking for more ways to treat yourself better.
