How to Shake Off a Meltdown

By Sandy Schroeder

In today's world many of us have hit the wall at times, facing a meltdown fueled by anger, stress, or pure frustration. If you have been there, or are there right now, you know how important it is to regain your footing to calm down and recover your balance.

When your head is spinning with stressful feelings, it's hard to take care of your family, do your job, and stay healthy.

Harvard Health has come up with some tips to help you step back and regain control. Some stress is unavoidable but constant stress can take its toll on your body, your mental health, and your daily life.

You need to recognize the warning signs and be ready to change the tempo of your life.

How to Restore Calm

See if these work for you.

Take a good look at the details - When you feel overwhelmed by health, finances or family worries it's easy to lose track of the facts. Make the time to sit down and create a list of the details, outlining the worries and the facts that match. Often that produces a sense of calm as you restore your grip and start to see what needs to be done.

Cut yourself some slack - If every day feels like a work day without a break, it may be time to create some small breaks to relieve the stress. Take early morning or evening walks. Cook your favorite dishes. Spend time outside with your family cooking, walking or biking. Little breaks will help to ease the pressure and help you relax.

Reach out to others - When you talk with friends, family or neighbors, you may find they are facing similar issues. Time spent talking will help you gain perspective and may provide new ideas.

Exercise every day - Short walks, runs or workouts will lift your spirits, ease your mind and relax your muscles. You will probably sleep better too.

Discover meditation - Short meditations in the morning or the evening may be a simple way to calm down and regain your focus. Find a quiet spot to sit and just breathe as you let your thoughts stream by unchecked. Later you may think more clearly and work more effectively.

If you are still feeling overwhelmed, see your doctor and a therapist to work through the issues.
