Adrenal Fatigue: What Is It?

By Sara Butler

A lot is going on in the world right now -- it's an uncertain time for many people. That can lead to feelings of lethargy and energy loss, which is why self-care is as important as ever these days.

Making sure to get enough sleep, eat right, and exercise regularly can do wonders for how you feel overall and can help make you feel more energetic, too. But if you're doing all those things and still feel wiped at the end of the day, then you may be experiencing adrenal fatigue.

Here's what you need to know about adrenal fatigue and what you can do to help.

Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal fatigue is not widely accepted as an official diagnosis but that doesn't mean it still can't cause symptoms for those that struggle with it.

It's thought to happen when the body is in a constant fight or flight mode. If you have high levels of the stress hormone cortisol in your system constantly, then it can cause burnout of your adrenal system. This is the system that is responsible for the stress response as well as maintaining blood pressure, the immune system, and metabolism. When burnout occurs then the hormones released by the adrenal system cannot effectively regulate the hormones, causing physical symptoms like fatigue.

The Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue

There are several symptoms of adrenal fatigue to be on the lookout for. They include:

  • You feel tired all the time - The most common symptom is continuous exhaustion
  • Body aches - Many people also experience body aches for no reason when they have adrenal fatigue
  • Caffeine and sugar cravings - Since people with adrenal fatigue are exhausted, they often reach for sugary or caffeinated beverages to help them keep going

What You Can Do

If you suspect you are suffering from adrenal fatigue, then there are some things you can do to help. You should make sure to get exercise each day, as even 15 minutes of walking can help to provide stress relief. So can continuing to eat well and getting all the sleep you need. Most importantly, take the time to listen to your body and take care of yourself, making sure to make time for self-care and relaxation. If you're still struggling after that, then make sure to talk to the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic.
