3 Ways to Combat Osteoarthritis Pain

By Stephen R. Farris

As we grow older, those aches and pains felt can become lingering. I bet it's at this point we all wish to be younger again, but, it's something we just have to deal with and hopefully find relief, especially if the pain persists in the hip area.

We use our hips to rotate our mid-section, or move our upper body from one side to the other, as well as a few other movements. It's helpful if we keep our core area as strong as possible and that includes the hips as well.

But sometimes -- especially in older folks -- the chances of developing hip problems can occur, and often could end up leaving us with hip arthritis (or more commonly referred to as hip osteoarthritis, OA for short).

Luckily, there are treatment options available if you experience hip pain, or OA.

Manage Your Weight

Managing your weight is one of the best ways to help alleviate hip pain, as it reduces the strain on your joints. Plus, dropping some extra pounds offers additional health benefits by lowering your risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

Medication

Certain medications can provide temporary relief from hip pain. Usually ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and naproxen, are all nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs available over-the-counter that help relieve pain. But if you're looking for more natural ways in seeking pain relief, there are plenty of herbs and raw foods available that are high in antioxidants and contain natural compounds to combat inflammation. Changing up your diet can have more of a long-term effect versus the temporary ones OTC meds give you.

Exercise

Depending on the severity of your hip pain, you might try some low-impact exercises such as cycling, walking, yoga or tai chi, light-weight training, swimming or water aerobics. Always check with your local chiropractor or primary physician before starting any exercise program, especially if it's been a while since you were active.

The important thing is to keep moving as much as possible.
