Fuel Your Weight Loss With a Healthy Breakfast
By Rachel Carver
We all do it: the mad scramble to get the kids ready for school and start working on time. Many of us still work at home while kids log into school in the next room. It can be easy to grab a doughnut as you sit down at your desk, or to just skip breakfast completely. However, research suggests that a healthy morning meal can set the tone for your food habits the rest of the day.
A nutritious breakfast can help with weight loss and can boost your metabolism. Check out these breakfast rules to ensure you make the most out of your morning meal.
Avoid Sweet Breakfasts
Oatmeal with honey and fruity smoothies appear to be healthy food options. However, a sweet breakfast often leads to sugar cravings during the rest of the day. Sugar-heavy breakfasts spike insulin levels, which are usually followed by energy crashes later in the day. Consider a savory breakfast such as eggs with avocado or a veggie hash with sausage. Breakfasts high in protein will keep you full longer and your blood sugar even.
Drink Black Coffee
Coffee is a must-have for many of us. However, adding sugar and flavored creamers turns your healthy coffee into a dessert. To stick to your calorie goal and take advantage of coffee health benefits, drink black coffee. If you can't quite stomach the taste, try adding a splash of milk to the top.
Meal Prep
We wish we could cook a hot breakfast every morning but know this is not realistic. Preparing your meals in advance will save you time and stop you from driving through fast-food burger place on your way to work. Find an overnight oat or egg cup recipe that appeals to your taste buds. Add your breakfast prep to your evening routine, and you will not have to worry about finding something to eat before your day begins.
Practice Mindful Eating
This can sometimes be tough, but taking a few minutes to focus only on your food will make you more aware of what you eat as well as your portion sizes. It is easy to overeat if you are distracted by your computer or TV. Taking slow, mindful bites can increase meal satisfaction and help you feel full sooner, which can lessen feelings of deprivation as you lose weight.
