Staying Healthy On-the-Go

By Emily Lindholm

Most of us who strive to eat healthy share this question when it comes to eating healthy on-the-go:  What can we eat?

The best is when I'm traveling on the road. I have found myself standing inside of countless gas stations, staring, walking around aimlessly, just hoping that I'll come across that one thing that fits in with my dietary choices.  Usually, I end up leaving with a bag of mixed nuts and fishing around in it for the pecan pieces.

Even on any normal given day, I am usually on-the-go.  Most of us can say the same.  Look at the drive-thru line at Starbucks, and it will show you how fueled up our lives are.  How can we prepare for each day so that we can sustain and nourish our bodies the way that we would like to?  Unless your office is right next to one of those healthy grab-and-go places, you'll most likely need to plan.

Tips for a Healthy Lifestyle On-the-Go

Here are some tips to help you stay healthy while maintaining an active lifestyle.

Stock up on mason jars - Stock up on mason jars of all sizes.  Even if there is no time to pack anything else, make a nice sauce or dressing to take with you and add it to something that otherwise might be bland, such as a cup of quinoa.  Mason jars are also great for taking fresh juices or smoothies on-the-go.

Choose your containers - Make sure to have the right containers and enough of them so that you never run short.  Use containers with lids that won't accidentally slip, such as ones that snap shut.  Pack your food the night before so that you don't forget anything.

Use a slow cooker - These are more beneficial if you're busy at home all day, but this year a lot of us have been.  You can make a big pot of soup and have it cook all night, ready for the next day.  This helps to keep the kitchen mess at a minimum and saves you time!

Be simple and versatile - Make simple meals with versatile ingredients.  For example, you could prepare some brown rice and lentils but load up on the spices and sauce.  This is a simple way to make something easy pack and full of flavor.

Get a lunch box - This might bring you back to your school days, but seriously, get a lunch box! Lunch boxes have come a long way.  Some of them come with built-in systems for keeping your food cool, and vice versa.

Remember to plan for your meals and prep accordingly.  This is how you'll find the most success.  Make lists, and keep a steady inventory of your pantry.  Eating healthy does not have to be a scramble.  Use these tips to make it easy!
