Beat the Winter Blues With These Health Tips

By Stepy Kamei

As the colder months approach, there are plenty of things for us to look forward to. If you celebrate holidays, there's quite a few of them that pop up during this time of year. The weather outside is usually cold and uninviting, while the sun sets relatively early, making a perfect invitation for us to spend lots of time safe and warm inside. It can be a time of rest and reflection. However, it can't be denied that alongside these perks of the winter season, there are some downsides as well.

Many people experience a noticeable decrease in their mood and energy levels during the cold and dark months of the year. This certainly makes sense, and has been backed up by science, since studies show that the decrease in daylight can actually lead to increased instances of depression and anxiety, with a reduction in overall feelings of energy, positivity, and productivity. Fortunately, this is a well-known phenomenon, which means there are plenty of helpful tips and tricks out there to help you combat the winter blues before they get to you.

Spend as Much Time Outside as Possible

The winter months are known for their dark, rainy skies. However, the sun still comes out at least occasionally. The next time you notice that the sun is out, or at least, weather conditions are relatively mild, you should take advantage of the situation and go outside for a walk. Regardless of the time of year, studies have shown that getting outside and walking in the daylight hours can greatly help improve a person's mood, energy levels, and productivity throughout the rest of the day. Being out in the sun can also regulate a person's sleep-wake cycle, making it easier to stay alert and focused throughout the day while sleeping deeply throughout the evening hours.

Stay Connected

The cold and harsh winter months can make it easy to neglect your friendships and social connections, as it's often too cold or dark to go out and meet with people. Still, you should be sure to make time to talk with your close friends or loved ones, even if it's over the phone or a video call. Don't let the dreariness of the season discourage you from talking with people who help you feel better!

Consider Light Therapy

Some people find it difficult to deal with the increase in darkness during the winter months. If this applies to you, consider getting a light therapy lamp. Studies have shown that people who use light therapy during the winter season tend to experience an overall decrease in symptoms of depression. Be sure to speak with a mental health professional for further guidance on how this can help you.

Speaking of mental health professionals, if you find your mood takes an especially sharp downward turn during this time of year, and you found yourself relating to many aspects of this article, you may want to consider seeing a therapist on a regular basis as well. Talk therapy can be extremely beneficial in reducing feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and stress at all times of the year, but especially when it's dark and cold outside.
