5 Foods That Fight Illness

By Brandi Goodman

Illness can set in any time of year, yet the fall and winter seasons tend to see the worst of it. Colds, flus, and other common sicknesses are easily spread and tend to run rampant during the cold weather months. Consider improving your diet as a means of fighting off these potential illnesses. At least five foods exist that can help your body fight.

Bone Broth

Broth is ideal when you're already feeling unwell. The steam from the heat can help with decongestion and open up your airways. The hot liquid down your throat can ease some of the scratchiness and help to soothe the discomfort. Bone broth can also be used to fight illness because it contains many important nutrients, such as protein, folate, and magnesium.

Garlic

Looking to stimulate your immune system? Garlic should be your start. The onion-related plant has many properties that help to boost your body's immunity and prevent illness. It offers antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties.

Honey

Honey is another option that offers antibacterial properties. Many people use the sticky, golden substance in teas and hot drinks as a means to coat their throats and ease the associated discomfort. You should use organic, raw honey rather than the extra sugary options.

Ginger

Sometimes our stomachs are what's most impacted by illness. You may find it difficult to hold down any food or drinks. Ginger is used for this purpose because it is said to have anti-nausea effects. A ginger tea is a viable option, but you can also use fresh ginger in a smoothie to get the benefits.

Bananas

Bananas are often easy to digest and contain fiber necessary for your digestive tract to function efficiently. They have a mild flavor and are easy to chew and swallow. You'll gain the calories and nutrition to help recover from your sickness. The BRAT diet is often recommended when you have the flu because the associated foods are tolerable to a sour stomach. Bananas start this diet, with rice, applesauce, and toast following.

Improve your diet with these five foods and other healthy options and you'll have a better chance of warding off illness this winter. Too many people allow sickness to spread and don't do everything they can to prevent it. Far more than just washing your hands staying away from others, you need to keep your own body healthy and well for your best chance at prevention or an easier recovery.
