Can't Sleep? It's Time to Figure Out Why!

By Donna Stark

You've been making sure to go to bed each night at least seven hours before you need to wake up, but you still feel tired in the morning and your brain is still foggy throughout the day. If you aren't sure what to do and if you were just about to give in and settle for a tired and foggy life, why don't you try to figure out what is going on first? Here are some possible reasons why you aren't waking up feeling bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

Your Bedroom Design

If your bedroom isn't designed for sleep, it could be causing you problems. Too much light or noise, too many distractions, the wrong temperature ... so many factors can wreck your night of quality rest. To avoid a night of tossing and turning, keep your bedroom dark and cool, invest in a white-noise machine, and turn off all electronic devices.

Your Mattress and Pillows

Part of a healthy bedroom design is a good, supportive mattress and set of pillows. If your mattress has seen better days and is older than your teen child, it would be wise to invest in a new one. When selecting your new mattress, take the time to try it out. Head to the stores, lie down on the ones you are interested in, and ask about their return policy. Many places will offer a free trial phase which is nice because you can rest assured knowing that your choice was the right one for you!

Your Time in Bed

Sleeping in may sound like a dreamy indulgence, but it can actually do more harm than good. Too much sleep can affect your body's natural sleep cycle and surprisingly, can even make you feel lethargic throughout the day. It is vital that you stick to a routine and consistent sleep schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same times each day.

Your Diet

It's no wonder that you have disrupted sleep if you enjoy a sweet treat, a cup of coffee or tea, or a glass of wine before bed each night. The food you consume throughout the day, but especially right before bed, can significantly interfere with how well your body can rest and may cause you to experience those tired and foggy mornings. Pay attention to what you are eating and at the very least, try to reduce your intake of caffeine, sugar, and alcohol later in the day.
